Who Can Borrow

We offer a variety of borrowing options for members of the U-M community and guests.

To borrow from our library locations, you must have a library card. In most cases this will be your Mcard

Students

Currently registered students from all three U-M campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint) can borrow, with additional privileges for certain graduate students.

Faculty and staff

Faculty and staff from the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses can borrow, including retirees. Active faculty can also assign people as proxies to borrow on their behalf.

Visiting scholars receive privileges on sponsoring department request.

Current faculty and staff may request borrowing privileges for a spouse or other qualified adult.

Alumni, guests, and Native and Indigenous peoples

Guests with specific academic affiliations can borrow through our agreements with other institutions. We also offer free guest borrowing privileges for Native and Indigenous peoples.

Alumni and all other guests can purchase borrowing privileges for an annual fee.

See alumni, guests, and Native and Indigenous peoples borrowing details.
