Scans from the Print Collection

Request digital scans of small portions of items from our physical collection at no cost to you. We notify you via email when your scans are ready for download. They are delivered electronically as PDFs and stored on our servers for a limited time.

This service is available to faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and staff.

What we can scan

Scans are most often for book chapters and journal articles. We also provide rush service specifically for urgent patient care requests.

We may be able to provide limited scanning from other formats. Contact us at document.delivery@umich.edu to discuss options.

If you place a request for a scan and we’re not able to fill it from our local collection, we’ll get it for you through interlibrary loan instead.

How to place a request

If you know details for what you need to request, you can go straight to filling out an article or book chapter request.

Log in to ILLiad to place a request

The option to request scans is also built into our systems for finding materials. These will take you to ILLiad and pre-populate the appropriate request form.

  • From Catalog items in Library Search, select Get This and request to have a small portion scanned
  • Anywhere you see an MGet It link or button (such as library databases), select it and then choose request to have a copy delivered

Access your scans

We will email you when your scans are ready. Requests are typically processed within 1–4 business days.

Once your request is delivered, log in to ILLiad to download it. You have 14 days to access and download your PDF, or 5 views total, whichever comes first.

Please contact us at document.delivery@umich.edu if you receive an incomplete, incorrect, or unreadable scan.

All scans should comply with United States resource sharing scanning guidelines to be remediation-ready. See more about requesting modifications for accessibility.

Copyright

We evaluate requests on a case-by-case basis based on our rights under copyright law.

If you request a larger portion of the source material than we can scan, we will refer you to our other item pick up or delivery services. You can also recommend a purchase for the library collection.

We are not able to create digital scans of personal materials or items from outside our collection.

The Copyright Office provides information, resources, workshops, and consultations to help you make decisions about sharing and using copyrighted material in your research, learning, and teaching.
