Directions to the Hatcher Gallery

The Hatcher Gallery (Room 100) is located in the far east corner of the Hatcher North first floor, off the lobby (the entrance from the Diag).

Hatcher Library is not an easy building to navigate. We have an overview of navigating the building and you can ask library staff at any desk if you’d like help getting where you need to go. You can also contact us by phone at 734-764-0401 and by email, chat, and more at Ask a Librarian.

Routes that do not require stairs or a steep ramp include narrow passageways through the stacks and sets of doors that do not open automatically. Please ask staff at the desk if you need help navigating the building.

From Hatcher North

When entering the Hatcher Library off the Diag, the east (left) pedestrian ramp meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards for steepness and surface condition, but the west ramp does not.

The entrance to the gallery is located in the southeast corner of the north lobby. A ramp leads into the room. This ramp is very steep and may not be usable for some people with mobility impairments.

Route without any incline

  1. Take any elevator in the north lobby to floor 2.
  2. At floor 2, exit the elevator and head toward the large central area.
  3. On your left — beyond Hatcher 206, but before a bank of computers — is a door labeled “North Stacks.” It is the second door on the left. Enter and follow the yellow tape on the floor, which leads to a second elevator.
  4. Take this second elevator down to floor 1.
  5. Exit the elevator at floor 1. There will be a set of doors across from the elevator to your left. Enter these doors into the book stacks.
  6. Follow the yellow tape past a set of stairs and to the first door on your right. It's labeled "Hatcher Gallery Accessible Access." Use this door to enter the Hatcher Gallery.
  7. Walk around the glassed in area in front of you into the main gallery space.

From Hatcher South

Enter the library from the south lobby, which is located off South University Avenue behind the Clements Library. This entrance is wheelchair accessible, has an automatic door, and no incline.

  1. Take any elevator in the south lobby to floor 2.
  2. At floor 2, exit the elevator and turn right. You will enter a carpeted floor that is part of Hatcher North. There will be banks of computers in rows on both sides.
  3. The first door on the right beyond the computers is labeled “North Stacks.” Yellow tape on the floor leads to a second elevator in the back.
  4. Take this second elevator down to floor 1.
  5. Exit the elevator at floor 1. There will be a set of doors on your left, across from the elevator. These doors lead into the book stacks. Follow the yellow tape past a set of stairs and to the first door on your right. Use this door to enter the Hatcher Gallery.
