Learning Programs and Initiatives

As one of the departments within the Research and Teaching division, Learning Programs and Initiatives leads the library’s activities related to information literacy and scholarly research instruction, focusing on the concepts of critical thinking, source discovery and evaluation, and academic integrity. 

Services include instruction and course services, engaged learning programs, media streaming services, and library credit courses. We provide orientation services tailored to the needs of international students and transfer students, as well as outreach to campus student organizations and university learning communities.

We help users find library resources, connect with experts across the library, and design classes that incorporate information literacy skills through assignment design, scaffolded instruction, and student engagement. We are committed to designing inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all users to facilitate the discovery and use of information resources and expertise.

• We continue to expand our digital instruction modules on various information literacy topics, including using Generative AI for library research.
• We design and teach curriculum-related information literacy instruction in-person and online
• We coordinate library workshops on research, technology, and publishing topics that are open to current U-M campus affiliates.
• We coordinate library credit-based courses offered through LSA.
• We provide engaged learning opportunities for students through several programs including Peer Information Consulting, Student Engagement Program, and the Michigan Library Scholars.
• We collaborate with library and campus colleagues to improve the instructional and pedagogical support for media.
