About the space

A variety of seating options are available across the Clark Commons to support individual and group study. The openness of the space lets in natural light no matter where you sit and movable whiteboards are scattered around the floor.

Central “living room” area

The area in the middle of the floor near the central stairs has a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by counter-height seating. There’s one-sided cushioned booths with tables, bar-height tables, and other various shaped tables suitable for individuals or groups

A wood-slatted wall separates the center of the floor from the area outside the Shapiro Reading Room on the south end of the floor. This space has a slightly different feel with high and low-backed armchairs, couches, and round tables with lamp lighting.

Perimeter and lobby

On the east and west sides of the central seating area, there’s a mix of tables and chairs, a few different types of large booths, and some individual desks with partitions for privacy. Along the walls, there are collaboration areas set up for teamwork and many whiteboards. Some of the areas have a large divider between the collaboration area and other seating.

Around the perimeter of the floor, there are tables tucked into windowed nooks. You find more of these as you head toward the connector to the Hatcher Library, along with a lobby space that has long couches, small tables, and plants.

Other study space on the floor

In addition to this mix of seating you’ll find 3 types of computing spaces.

There are also bookable soundproof booths, a well-being room, and bookable group study rooms.

The Shapiro Gallery is near the central stairs and has tables and chairs set up for studying when there isn’t a current exhibit.
