About the space

The perimeter of the book stacks in Hatcher North is a treasure trove of study space. All seating is on the south end of each floor and near windows offering plenty of natural light. The windows on the basement floor are slightly smaller since it sits at ground level.

These out-of-the-way locations are well-suited for people studying on their own, or groups doing quiet, focused work.

Navigating the Hatcher North stacks

The most direct access to enter the stacks is through the door at the end of the floor 1 lobby, double doors in the center of floor 2, or Asia Library Reading Room on floor 4.

There is access to all floors from the elevator lobby on the east side of the floor, as well as the east stairwell. You can access some stacks floors, but not all,  from the west stairwell. You can also access the north stacks from floor 4 of Hatcher South.

Once you’re in the stacks, there are stairs between them near the center of the floor. Look for directions on the walls for east, central, and west — plus stickers and directional lines on the floor — to help orient yourself.
