Carrel reservations

Week and semester-long carrel reservations are available at the Hatcher Library

To reserve a carrel, visit the Hatcher North Information Services Desk.

Students can reserve one of nine available donor carrels for a week-long period.

Semester-long carrel reservations are available for U-M-Ann Arbor faculty who are actively writing for publication, and U-M doctoral students writing their dissertations. The fee is $15 per semester.

Due to space constraints, we are unable to make reservations for other library users. Visiting scholars, research staff, and others can use our open carrel space

Sharing space

If you reserve a carrel for a semester, you’ll be sharing it with two other people who have access at different times than you. These designated times of use are:

  • Morning (8 am to 1 pm)
  • Afternoon (1 pm to 6 pm)
  • Evening: (6 pm to close)

Each carrel has three shelves, one for each person. You should only use your assigned shelf and keep the carrel neat and orderly.

Carrel keys for semester and weekly reservations are distributed at the Hatcher North Information Services Desk. You must return carrel keys at the end of your assignment. There is a $15 fee to replace lost carrel keys.

Maintenance and security

All carrels are checked on a regular basis by staff. Any library books kept in your carrel should be checked out on your account.

If you use a carrel, you can report security or maintenance problems to the Hatcher North Information Services Desk.

If you have a carrel assigned for a semester, you’ll be notified about your renewal options by email near the end of your reservation. If you choose not to renew, you must return your key by the end of the semester.

Because of the high demand for carrels, please contact the Hatcher North Information Services Desk if you no longer need your semester carrel reservation.
