Pochoir, French for stencil, was a popular technique for creating multicolored art popular in the early part of the 20th century. See our vibrant examples from design, fashion, and garden publications, as well as a meticulously crafted new reproduction of the most famous pochoir artwork, an artist’s book by Sonia Delaunay.

Join us (on the 6th floor of Hatcher) for Third Thursdays at the Library, a themed monthly open house where we share materials from our collections. While you’re here, pick up a Third Thursday Passport and collect a stamp from each of the four Third Thursday Open Houses — the Clark Library, International Studies, Asia Library, and the Special Collections Research Center — to win a prize!

Several colorful stencil patterns, with a center oval depicting pink flowers.

Detail from "Formes et couleurs; vingt planches en couleurs contenant soixante-sept motifs décoratifs," Paris, 1920.
