Astronomy

We maintain collections to support the work of researchers in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and related disciplines, giving special attention to active areas of research. We primarily work to meet the needs of researchers in the departments of Physics and Astronomy, but aim to support all University of Michigan scientists with astronomy needs.

We strive to collect all English-language materials on theoretical astronomy and celestial mechanics, descriptive astronomy (including stars, galaxies, and interstellar phenomena), cosmogony and cosmology, and astrophysics. Works on practical and spherical astronomy are collected at more selective levels, as are non-English materials. Although the majority of recent astronomy materials are now provided electronically, we also curate a rich collection of print materials spanning the long history of the discipline.

The Special Collections Research Center houses a substantial collection of rare and historical astronomy materials, including astronomical atlases, manuscripts, and incunabula.
