Mathematics and Statistics

As one of the largest and most comprehensive mathematics collections in the country, we strive to collect all significant mathematical and statistical work, with a focus on:

  • mathematical analysis
  • number theory
  • mathematical statistics and probability
  • advanced algebra including group theory, modern geometry, algebraic geometry and topology
  • history of mathematics

We maintain a collection in applied mathematics, actuarial mathematics, recreational mathematics, and works on mathematics education to support the research and teaching needs of the departments of Mathematics and Statistics

Important related collections

The Special Collections Research Center holds hundreds of volumes on the history of mathematics, including an important collection of early editions of Euclid.

History of the collection

An early digitization project of approximately 1,000 historical books were scanned from the collection and made available at the University of Michigan Historical Mathematics Collection.
