A new humanities infrastructure

In a recent article in Inside Higher Ed, Charles Watkinson (U-M associate university librarian for publishing and director of the University of Michigan Press) and Melissa Pitts (director of the University of British Columbia Press) highlight the importance of university presses, and issue a challenge to private and government funders to support and enhance what they call "a network of innovative laboratories for scholars."
As part of this effort, the U-M Press is pursuing a fund-to-mission strategy, which will make its scholarly books free to read online, and has created digital platforms for rich and fully accessible ebook content.
