How to request ILL services

Materials may be requested from another institution by filling out an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) form at the Information Services Desk or Circulation Desk of Taubman Medical Library, Dentistry Library and PHLI, or fill out a form below.

The Interlibrary Loan Department of Taubman Medical Library will process your requests. Turn around time varies: most journal article requests are filled within ten days and most book requests are filled within two to three weeks.

Who can use ILL services

This service is free of charge to faculty, staff and students of the University of Michigan. Retired and adjunct UM faculty are also entitled to this service. The Taubman Medical Library Interlibrary Loan Department provides ILL services to patrons affiliated with School of Medicine, the UM Health System, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and other health sciences disciplines. The ILL Department at the Graduate Library (764-8584) serves other UM schools and colleges.

Individual users who are NOT affiliated with UM and who are not corporate users may make use of our ILL article delivery services through the National Library of Medicine's Loansome Doc feature in PubMed. There is a $11.00 per article charge for each filled request (fax delivery is $3.00 extra). If you would like to establish an agreement with the Taubman Medical Library to have us serve as your ordering library, please click here for registration information. If you have already established an agreement with us, then you will have the information you need to complete the registration process in PubMed. Here, you will need to click on "Registration" on the left side of the page. After you do, on the next page hit the GO button under "If you are new..." and the Registration button on the bottom of the page that follows.

Corporate users may request interlibrary loan of materials through MITS, the Michigan Information Transfer Source.

When to use ILL services

ILL obtains materials not available in any of the campus libraries of the University of Michigan Library System or in the Law or Business School Libraries. Although the service is free of charge to UM affiliates, the library absorbs an average cost of $11 per article or book request. It is important to check the online catalog, Mirlyn, before submitting a request to avoid requests being returned to you for items we actually own. The following conditions warrant an ILL request:

  • Title not owned
  • At Conservation
  • Volume/issue not owned
  • Missing (According to Mirlyn)
  • At Bindery
  • Long Overdue

If an article is in a title available at Taubman, UM requestors may order photocopies through 7-FAST .

If a book you want is checked out, you may place a recall on it.
